Job Description
Purpose:
The Special Education Teacher is an instructor of students with special needs and is responsible for the collaborative development of individualized education plans and services in the buildings assigned. To carry out these tasks, the Special Education Teacher must work closely with students, parents, general and special education staff, and general and special education administration.
Responsible To:
Director, Assistant Directors, Special Education Coordinators, and building Principal
Payment:
Based on educational level, certification(s), and years of experience
Qualifications:
- Appropriate current state licensure or ability to obtain a waiver.
- Support an optimal learning environment in all educational settings.
- Ability to demonstrate professionalism in the workplace.
- Experience or understanding of essential functions of a special education teacher. Including knowledge of best practice in teaching, IEP writing, and familiarity of procedural due process.
- Knowledge of building level special education programs and activities conform to federal, state, and Interlocal guidelines.
- Able to demonstrate the capacity to communicate effectively with students, parents, paraeducators, related service providers, general education providers, and the district and special education administrative staff.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with public and private agencies, community organizations, and general education providers.
- Ability to exhibit good time management and flexibility in scheduling.
- Support the mission and the goals of SEK Interlocal #637.
Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:
- Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
- Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull or push heavy objects or materials.
- Occasional stooping, bending, and reaching.
- Some travel required, as needed.
- Must work indoors and outdoors year-round.
- Must work in noisy and crowded environments.
Essential Functions:
Planning and preparation based upon students' Individualized Education Plan
- Demonstrate knowledge of pedagogy, content, and students
- Select instructional goals
- Demonstrate knowledge of resources
- Assess student learning using appropriate measures
- Create, develop, and provide curriculum and resources individualized to students' needs
Instruction based upon students' Individualized Education Plan
- Communicate clearly and accurately
- Motivate students through effective communication and evaluative feedback.
- Use a variety of instructional strategies and techniques
- Engage students in learning
- Provide timely feedback to students
- Demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness to student needs
Classroom Environment
- Create a classroom environment of respect and rapport
- Establish a culture for learning
- Establish and maintain classroom procedures
- Establish expectations for and manage student behaviors to maintain a positive climate for learning
- Set high expectations for student achievement and behavior.
- Organize space for learning
Performance Responsibilities
- Develop, amend, and maintain individualized education plans in a timely and accurate manner.
- Review Invidualized Education Plans to ensure they are compliant, written to reflect best practice, reflect high quality programming, and are implemented with fidelity and integrity.
- Submit necessary documentation and paperwork in a timely manner.
- Utilize data to guide focus of IEPs and improve student acheivement.
- Supervise, provide professional development, and schedule paraeducators
Professional Responsibilities

- Provide daily feeding and/or mealtime supervision, toileting and hygiene care as needed.
- Grade papers and record keeping.
- Take attendance and record absences.
- Attend staffing and general staff meetings as requested.
- Assist in the maintenance and inventory of materials.
- Immediately report accidents, assaults, destruction of property, and abusive behavior to appropriate staff/administration.
- Adhere to required program.
- See that district and Interlocal policies are observed during all activities.
- Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques.
- Adhere to all district and Interlocal health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
- Respond in a positive manner to changes in assigned duties.
