Deaf Education Interpreter - Part Time 

 

Part-time (4 days a week, for half days) 

 

Location: USD 508 Baxter Springs Kansas 

 

Purpose: 

           

The Deaf Education Interpreter provides interpreting and other support services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in all aspects of the educational environment. The Interpreter’s primary function is to facilitate communication
among students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their hearing peers, the classroom teacher, and other personnel in the school system

 

This position may work with students in Early Childhood settings, Elementary or Secondary classrooms, resource rooms, or with speech and school psych providers.  Additionally, this position may work with students with mild to moderate disabilities whom may also be deaf/hard of hearing, have visual impairments, and or other disabilities, and are able to be served in the general education setting. 

 

Responsible to: Special Education Teacher, District Administration; SEK 637 Administration

 

Experience:  Job related experience is desired.

 

Education/Qualifications:  

Required:

1. High school diploma or GED.
2. Proficient command (receptive and expressive) of sign language systems
3. Must be able to change schedule and daily routines on short notice
4. Must have proficient technology skills commonly found in classroom environments.

 

Preferred:

1. Post-Secondary degree and/or relevant certification/licensure
2. Level 3 or higher on the EIPA, KQAS or possess a RID national certification.
3. Experience working with students with special needs in the school setting.
4. Effectively communicate solutions to complex problems

 

Clearances: (Required upon offer of/and acceptance of employment)

  • Criminal Background check
  • Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in Central Office

 

FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

 

Wages:  Based on hourly rate, number of days worked, and completion of required trainings (9-month school calendar)

 

 

Essential Functions:

1. Demonstrate the ability to adjust interpretation (signing and voicing) to match the level of sophistication of the language mode/system used by the recipient of services.
2. Interpret classroom lectures, assignments, demonstrations, announcements, videos (if closed caption is unavailable, or if the student is unable to utilize captioning), group activities or discussions and student interactions.
3. Provide necessary clarification, elaboration, or adjustments in an interpreted message due to differences in knowledge base, culture, language, or experiences.

4. Participate as a team member in the comprehensive evaluation, re-evaluation process, and IEP process.
5. Interpret for special situations such as organizations or class meetings, conferences with principal or counselor, IEP meetings, and other school-related activities.
6. Participate in off-campus activities and field trips.

7. Assume responsibility for individual professional growth by staying current with literature, research, and/or practices.
8. Demonstrate proficiency in ability to effectively and regularly communicate with other employees of the SEK 637 and constituents.
9. Complete all assignments in a timely manner including communication with other staff and families.
10. Follow all safety requirements as directed by the SEK 637.
11. Regular and predictive attendance in designated work location as determined by the Director or designee.
12. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director or designee.

 

Job Requirements:  Minimum Qualifications:

 

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.  Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:  adhering to safety practices, operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and using district approved crisis intervention techniques. 

 

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; read and follow instructions; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.  Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:  instructional procedures and practices; age appropriate student activities; safety practices and procedures; conflict resolution; and stages of child development/behavior; and safe handling of blood-borne pathogens and crisis de-escalation techniques.

 

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, collect data;  and use basic, job-related equipment.  Flexibility is required to work with others; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods.  Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals.  Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans.  Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:  communicating/collaboration with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; working as part of a team; working with constant interruptions; and the ability to take constructive feedback.

 

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions: 

 

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions frequently require the following physical demands:  walking, sitting, standing, lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling, climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, and fine finger dexterity.  This position may also require some travel, the ability to work indoors/outdoors year around, as well as the ability to work in noisy, stressful, and crowded environments.
